FRISCO, Texas - The 2010 Southland Conference All-Academic teams were announced on Thursday with three Ladyjacks - Sabrina Burns, Madison Hanlan and Allison Gideon - each being selected to the team.
The All-Academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each SLC university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.00 cumulative grade point average, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
Automatic selections are earned from having met all qualifications in addition to being named to the All-SLC first team, or by being named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team.
Burns and Hanlan were both automatic selections to the first team after being selected to the all-district team, and Gideon made her way onto the second team after playing every set for the Ladyjacks as a redshirt freshman. All three players made the team in their first season of eligibility, and it marks the fifth consecutive year the Ladyjacks have had multiple selections to the first team.
Burns currently holds a perfect 4.0 GPA in accounting and was second on the team with nearly a block per set and is averaged 1.42 kills per set as well while being one of SFA's primary players at the net this season. The McAlester, Okla., sophomore has hit double-figure kills three times on the season with a season best 13 kills in a win over North Texas, and put up one of the top single-match block totals in the league this season when she rejected 11 shots in a four-set win over Samford.
Hanlan was also awarded first team honors and finished ranked in the sixth in the league in digs with 4.52 from her libero spot. She has put up at least 10 digs in 24 of 25 matches on the season and has hit at least 20 digs in eight of those matches as well, including a career-best 29 digs at Sam Houston before going down with an injury late in the season. An honorable mention all-SLC selection as a freshman, the Arlington native also holds a perfect 4.0 GPA, doing so in biology.
Gideon was one of just two players to play every set for the Ladyjacks this season, running the offense from her setting position and finishing third in the SLC among freshmen in assists with 8.88 per set. She earned all-tournament honors at the Wichita State Shocker Classic and swung at a .239 clip for the season, averaging more kills per set (1.49) than any Ladyjack setter since JJ Jones in 2007. She was the only redshirt freshman on the team and one of just four players selected in their first year of eligibility.
