GRAMBLING, La. - The Grambling Lady Tigers erased a seven-point SFA lead late in regulation to force overtime, but the Ladyjacks never trailed in the extra period and escaped with a 69-64 win on Saturday at the Assembly Center.
Junior Tammara Marion led all scorers with 22 points, six of which came in overtime. It was the first time SFA (2-7) had been involved in an overtime game since an 84-81 win at Missouri in 2007.
Rachele Dobbins, who hit a game-winning three for the Tigers (4-6) in the team's last meeting in 2008, paced Grambling with 20 points her own, including the final six points of regulation.
Eight of nine Ladyjacks got at least 16 minutes on the night, with three players hitting double figures. Courtney Conwright and Cheyenne Berry joined Marion with 10 points apiece, with Berry knocking down two of five three-point baskets for SFA on the night.
The Tigers held the rebound edge, 46-34, and took advantage with 30 points in the paint, but SFA was able to turn 18 Grambling turnovers into 24 points while letting no player other than Dobbins into double figures.
A pair of jumpers from Berry helped spur a12-2 run midway through the first half helped SFA take a 32-22 lead into the break. That lead ballooned to as much as 17 in the second half as when SFA opened up the second 20 minutes with a 7-0 run that started with a layup from Chantol Drennan and ended with a jumper from Amina Sawyer.
Grambling chipped away at the lead from that point, but SFA was still able to hold a comfortable 11-point lead as late as the 6:03 mark. But a pair of free throws from Whitney Brown finally got the lead back to single digits and began a 14-3 run for the Tigers over the final five minutes that eventually sent the game into overtime.
SFA never trailed in the extra frame, taking the lead for good when Conwright converted on a three-point play at the 2:48 mark. The Tigers answered with a bucket on their next possession, but did not put a point on the board for the final 2:32 of the game.
The Ladyjacks now begin a 10-day layoff before their next game, a Dec. 21 matchup at Arkansas State.
