NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Sabrina Burns and Madison Hanlan were each named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI volleyball team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday, with Burns being named to the first team and Hanlan being named to the second team.
The pair of sophomore Ladyjacks make up half of a group of four Southland players that made the team, while Burns was the only first-team selection for a SLC player. SFA joined the University of New Mexico and the University of Oklahoma as the only three schools with multiple all-district selections.
To be eligible players had to be of significant contribution to their teams, be at least a sophomore in eligibility and carry a 3.30 GPA or higher while competing as a significant contributor in at least half of the team's matches for the season.
Both players made the team in their first season of eligibility and Burns' selection gives SFA a first-team member for the third time in four years. She currently holds a perfect 4.0 GPA in accounting and is second on the team with nearly a block per set and is averaging 1.36 kills per set as well while being one of SFA's primary players at the net this season. The McAlester, Okla., sophomore has hit double-figure kills three times on the season with a season best 13 kills in a win over North Texas, and she put up one of the top single-match block totals in the league this season when she rejected 11 shots in a four-set win over Samford.
Hanlan was awarded second team honors and currently ranks in the top five in the league in digs with 4.52 from her libero spot. She has put up at least 10 digs in 24 of 25 matches on the season and has hit at least 20 digs in eight of those matches as well, including a career-best 29 digs at Sam Houston. An honorable mention all-SLC selection as a freshman, the Arlington native also holds a perfect 4.0 GPA, doing so in biology.
With their selections both Burns and Hanlan will be included on the ballot for Academic All-America honors in December.
