NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Tammara Marion hit six three-point buckets and scored 24 points, but defending Conference USA champion Tulane had four players in double figures and picked up a 83-65 win over SFA in the Ladyjack's home opener on Saturday at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
SFA (0-3) knocked down 10 triples on 26 tries for the night, but was just 12 of 52 shooting from inside the arc, while the Green Wave (3-0) outscored the Ladyjacks 36-16 in the paint and got 29 points off turnovers.
Marion's six threes were just one long ball away from the school single-game record of seven, which she tied against Central Arkansas last season. It is the third time in three games she has led the team in scoring. Decreasha Goodner also had a solid night with 13 points and seven rebounds along with a trio of triples herself. Jordan Ford became the first Ladyjack of the season with double-figure rebounds, pulling down 11.
Roshaunda Barnes led the Green Wave's assault, pouring home 21 points with three assists and four rebounds. Tiffany Aidoo, Whitney Bibbens and Olivia Grayson all finished in double figures as well for Tulane.
Tulane opened up the game on a 10-0 run before the Ladyjacks finally began to answer, putting together a 9-2 run over a three-minute span that ended when Goodner canned a corner three-ball on a feed from Ebony Alexander to give the Ladyjacks a 23-22 lead with 5:52 left in the half.
But the Green Wave responded and closed out the half with momentum of its own, finishing on a 16-5 run in the closing five minutes to take a 40-30 lead into the break.
Tulane then opened up the second half by scoring nine of the half's first 11 points, and ballooned the lead to as much as 27 points in the game's second 20 minutes. Marion did the bulk of her damage late in the game, hitting four three-pointers in a two-minute window late in the second half.
The Ladyjacks get a few days off before heading off to the west coast for the Loyola-Marymount Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif., where they will take on the host Lions in the tournament opener.
