FRISCO, Texas - Two days after completing its first Southland Conference series sweep in over a month, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team recorded a Southland sweep of a different nature. SFA's Briana Bishop and Monika Covington took both of the league's weekly awards Monday, according to an announcement by SLC officials.
Following a three-game pasting of Central Arkansas, Bishop was named the SLC Hitter of the Week, while Covington took her second SLC Pitcher of the Week honor. She becomes just the third player in the conference this season to have earned multiple Pitcher of the Week awards, while SFA's clean sweep marks the fifth time this season for a single team to take both honors.
Each player was instrumental in taking the crucial three-game series against Central Arkansas over the weekend. SFA outscored the Bears, 27-3, for the series.
Bishop, a junior from College Station, Texas, tied a season-high for home runs by a Ladyjack in a league series with three against the Bears. In addition, her third bomb of the weekend put her in the record books as SFA's career leader with 24 homers. She also moved into a tie for the single-season lead, as her home run in the series finale was her 11th of the season.
For the weekend, Bishop batted .545, going 6-for-11 with 15 total bases for a team-leading 1.364 slugging percentage. She also drove in eight runs in the three-game set, a team season-high for an SLC series. Bishop hit two home runs in the series opener, marking her second multi-homer game of the year.
Covington went 2-0 in a pair of starts and didn't allow an earned run in 13.0 innings. She held the Bears to nine hits and a .176 batting average, allowing just one walk. The sophomore from Huffman, Texas, tossed 15 strikeouts on the weekend, including 10 in the opener, her eighth double-digit strikeout performance of the season. Covington now has 200 strikeouts on the season and has compiled a 15-11 record.
The Ladyjacks will return to action this weekend with a three-game SLC series against Nicholls State. The series is scheduled to begin Saturday with a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m.
