SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State used a strong second-half shooting performance to pull away from Stephen F. Austin Wednesday night at Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos, Texas. The Bobcats recorded a 73-60 victory, dropping SFA to 13-12 on the season and 8-5 in league play.
The Ladyjacks knocked down 4-of-their-first-8 shots to take an early lead in the contest, but Texas State was able to take advantage of some Ladyjack miscues to steal the momentum. SFA went through a 10-possession stretch where they turned the ball over six times, including three consecutive trips down the floor. SFA also missed two shots during that stretch allowing Texas State to build an eight-point lead.
The Ladyjacks would rally to reclaim the advantage on an Ebony Alexander three-pointer to take a 31-30 lead. But the Bobcats would answer with a Gabrielle Mattox three right before the break to take a two-point lead into the locker room.
The first couple of minutes in the second half saw Texas State take a four-point lead only to see SFA battle right back to tie the game. The Bobcats led by two, 39-37, when they rattled of a 17-7 run to take a 12-point lead, 54-42.
The Bobcats came out of the locker room and connected on 15-of-their-first-20 (75 percent) shots in the second half to build the double-digit lead. Texas State also made SFA pay for its turnovers. The Ladyjacks turned the ball over 16 times, which Texas State converted into 24 points, while SFA scored only 12 points from 15 Bobcat turnovers.
SFA out-rebounded Texas State, 38-33, but the Bobcats finished the game 32-of-65 (.492), including a 62-percent performance in the second half. The Ladyjacks finished the night 25-of-69 (.362).
Junior Whitney Cormier led SFA with 16 points, while freshman Amina Sawyer added 10 points. Sophomore Decreasha Goodner added three, and pulled down nine rebounds. Mattox and Victoria Davis led Texas State with 21 points.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they will host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The game against the Islanders is slated to begin 6 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
