SFA Game Notes
The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team (4-2) will be looking for consecutive wins for the second time this season when they travel to Houston, Texas, Saturday to take on Houston Baptist. After winning their first two games, the Ladyjacks have split their last four contest, but are coming off an 82-43 thrashing of Texas Southern. Saturday's is game is slated to tip off at 2:05 p.m. from the Sharp Gym.
SFA vs. the Huskies: Saturday's game will be only the second meeting between the two schools. The Ladyjacks won the first meeting with a 82-72 decision last season in Nacogdoches.
Season-Highs: Despite being forced to the sideline during the first two games of the season due to injury, sophomore Schera Sampson has become a steady offensive option. Sampson netted a season-high 10 points and pulled down five rebounds at nationally ranked Texas A&M. She followed that up with a 10-point, seven-rebound game against Texas Southern.
Hot Start: The Ladyjacks jumped out to a quick start offensively against Texas Southern knocking down 19-of-35 (.543) shots in the opening half. It marks the second time this season the Ladyjacks have shot at least 50 percent in a half (vs. Rice).
Scoring Offense: The Ladyjacks have been struggling offensively, in terms of field goal percentage, but those struggles haven't translated into a lack of points. The Ladyjacks are currently averaging 73.3 points per game, which is the third-best mark in the conference.
Record-Setting Performance: The Ladyjacks tied a school record with their 11 three-pointers against Texas Southern. It is a mark that has only been accomplished three times in school history. It is the first time since the 2004-05 season the Ladyjacks have recorded 11 threes. It is also the second time this season the Ladyjacks have knocked down at least 10 threes in a game.
Scoring Balance: The Ladyjacks utilized a balanced attack Sunday to defeat Texas Southern. All 13 players saw time against the Tigers, and 12 of the 13 scored at least two points in the game. Two Ladyjacks finished the game in double figures, while 10 players recorded scored at least six points.
Making It Tough on the Opponents: The Ladyjacks held Texas Southern to a 16-of-55 (.291) shooting performance. It is the second time this season that SFA has held an opponent below 30 percent from the field.
Basketball Court-ney: Sophomore guard Courtney Conwright is enjoying the fruits of her hard work this season. After battling through an-injury-plagued freshman campaign, Conwright has become an offensive weapon during her second season. In 2008-09 Conwright managed only 16 field-goal attempts, this season she is third on the team averaging 9.2 points per game, and has recorded three starts.
Senior Leadership: Senior Whitney Cormier continues to quietly go about her business. The Fort Worth, Texas, native scored 23 points against Michigan, which was Cormier's second consecutive 20-point effort. It is the second time since Feb. 11-14, 2009, that Cormier has scored at least 20 points in back-to-back games.
Decisive Win: The Ladyjacks recorded a 39-point margin of victory over Texas Southern. It is the program's largest margin of victory since recording an 84-45 win over Sam Houston State during the 2005-06 season.
Defense Doesn't Rest: The Ladyjacks surrendered only 43 points in their win over Texas Southern Sunday. It is the fewest points surrendered by a Ladyjack squad since SFA held Sam Houston State to 40 points in 2007-08.
Century Mark: The game against Texas A&M marked the 51st time in school history the Ladyjacks have played in a game where one team reached the 100-point plateau. SFA is 41-10 (.804) all-time in those contests.
Up Next ... The Ladyjacks return to action Sunday, Dec. 20, when they travel to New Orleans, La., to face Tulane. The game against the Green Wave is slated to begin at 2 p.m. from Fogelman Arena.
