WACO, Texas - The Lumberjacks could not hold back the weather or the Baylor offense on Wednesday, falling 11-0 to the Bears in seven innings at Baylor Ballpark in the season's final non-conference game.
SFA (24-27) has still won 10 of its last 12 games and will kick off its final regular season series of the year on Thursday at Sam Houston.
Baylor's (30-22) Tim Matthews was nearly unhittable for the Bears as he only allowed two hits in seven innings to pick up his fifth win of the year and his first complete game shutout. He retired 14 of the last 16 Lumberjacks he faced to end the game.
The final three innings were played under a tornado watch in Waco as Donnie Watson used the tune-up game to get his bullpen some work, using six pitchers on the evening. Freshman Jeremy Tamez got the start and was saddled with his first career loss, giving up a pair of runs in the first inning while striking out two Bears.
Kai Kirby opened up the game exactly how the `Jacks wanted, singling to left field off of Bears' starter Tim Matthews. Kirby then took advantage of his speed, stealing both second and third base to get 90 feet away from home with two outs; however, he got greedy on the first pitch from Matthews to Sean Meyers and was tagged out at the plate trying to pick up his fourth steal of home on the year to end the inning.
Baylor did not take long to get out in front of the `Jacks, getting a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Tamez sandwiched strikeouts of Shaver Hansen and Adam Hornung around a single from Beamer Weems and a walk to Adam Hornung to get runners at first and second with two outs. Right fielder Aaron Miller then delivered the big blow of the frame, flying a double over the head of Noel Trevino in right field to score both runs.
Kyle Watson took the hill for SFA in the second after the `Jacks went down in order in the top of the inning, but the result stayed the same as Weems brought home another Bear run with a double down the left-field line. Paul Miles scored the run to make it 3-0 after he reached on an infield single and moved to second when Jeff Brewer's throw from shortstop got past Meyers at the first base bag.
The Bears then batted around in their half of the third, sending 10 to the plate while plating six more runs to blow the game open and driving Watson from the game four batters into their half of the inning. The `Jacks used three pitchers in the frame, with Trevino finally ending the frame by throwing out Hansen at the plate while trying to score on a fly ball off the bat of Hornung with the score 9-0.
Richard Folmer and Bruce Mayberry would come on to pitch an inning apiece for SFA, giving up one run in each of the frames to push the lead to 11-0. Folmer picked up one strikeout in his inning while Mayberry fanned his final two hitters to close out the sixth.
Oddly enough, the game ended on the `Jacks third hit of the game; however, the ball off the bat of Justin Roland hit Adam Bosley on the foot trying to advance from first to second after a walk.
The `Jacks open up their series with Sam Houston at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday from Huntsville. The game can be heard live on KSFA 860 AM.
