HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Sam Houston scored nine unanswered runs, including six in the final two innings, to push past SFA 10-4 in the opening game of their season-ending series on Thursday.
With the loss and wins by both Southeastern Louisiana and UT-Arlington, SFA (24-28, 11-17 SLC) was eliminated from a possible berth in the SLC Tournament next week in Huntsville.
The `Jacks took 4-1 lead behind a three-run fifth inning, but Sam Houston (32-22, 17-11) pitchers Dallas Gallant and Justin Jackson combined to retire the final 14 batters they faced to secure the win.
Gallant picked up his seventh win in SLC play, while Lance Luetge dropped to 6-7 on the year after going 6 1/3 innings and allowing seven runs on 13 hits.
Sean Meyers was the only Lumberjack with multiple hits, going 2-for-4, and gave SFA the lead 3-1 with a two-run double with nobody out in the top of the fifth. He eventually came in to score on a bunt single by Justin Roland, but that was all the scoring for the `Jacks on the night.
Sam Houston answered in their half of the inning with three runs on five hits to tie the game, and pushed across three more apiece in both the seventh and eighth to cruise to the win.
The Lumberjacks and Bearkats continue their series on Friday with a 3:00 p.m. start time from Huntsville.
