NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team will try to bounce back from a rough weekend of tournament play when the Ladyjacks host North Texas in a doubleheader Wednesday. The two-game set is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. from Hoya Field.
The Ladyjacks are trying to end a five-game losing streak, their longest of the season. After opening Southland Conference play last week by taking two of three from league preseason favorite Sam Houston State, SFA landed in the hard-luck role at the Ole Miss Red and Blue Classic. The Ladyjacks dropped all five games in the weekend tournament, but by a total of just six runs. SFA suffered four one-run defeats to fall to 11-9 on the season.
Despite the five weekend losses, SFA's pitching staff maintains a respectable 2.53 earned run average. Freshman ace Monika Covington leads the staff with a 7-4 record and a 1.48 ERA. She has gone the distance in all 10 of her starts and leads the team with 64 strikeouts.
At the plate, SFA is batting .262 as a team, led by sophomore Kendal Harper's .475 average. With four doubles, four triples and two home runs, her .780 slugging percentage is also tops on the squad. Freshmen Ashley Struchtemeyer (.327) and Monica Hirsch (.302), along with junior Moriah Davis (.300) are the other three Ladyjacks batting over .300.
The Ladyjacks will try to rebound Wednesday against a Mean Green team that is 6-12 overall this year. North Texas has lost five of its last six games and has been outscored, 86-44, by its opponents. The Mean Green bat .227 as a team with a 4.21 team ERA.
