SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Freshman Jordan Ford scored 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks lost to Texas-San Antonio, 75-62, Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center. The Ladyjacks are now 7-14 on the season and 4-5 in Southland Conference play.
After UTSA jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, SFA head coach Lee Ann Riley called a 30-second timeout to settle down her troops, and it worked. The Ladyjacks broke the huddle and immediately jumped right back in the game. Senior Nikki Carr scored the team's first bucket with 17:28 remaining in the half. That field goal sparked a 10-0 run that culminated in SFA taking its first lead of the game on a Ford jumper with 16:16 on the clock.
The game remained close for the rest of the half, but UTSA was able to reclaim an advantage right before intermission. The Roadrunners rode the strength Onika Anderson who scored 14-first-half points, including the first six points of the game, to help give UTSA the advantage. The `Runners also won the battle on the glass in the opening half, 20-14, as they took a 33-26 lead into the locker room.
UTSA jumped out to a 10-point lead in the second half, but just like they did in the first, SFA came roaring back to pull to within three points, 42-39. The Ladyjacks went back to work on the glass to fight their back in the game outrebounding the `Runners by one, 39-38 for the game.
After the Roadrunners had built the lead back to double-digits, SFA responded by cutting down to five under three minutes remaining. But UTSA was clutch from the free throw line knocking down 9-of-10 to put the game on ice. The `Runners were 18-of-23 (.783) from the charity stripe for the game.
SFA finished the game 24-of-67 (.358) from the floor, while the Roadrunners shot 25-of-57 (.439). The Ladyjacks forced UTSA into 15 turnovers, which SFA converted into 17 points.
Freshman Decreasha Goodner added 13 points, and pulled down four rebounds. Classmate Chantol Drennan chipped in nine, and added eight boards. Senior Nikki Carr finished the game with nine points, four rebounds, five assists and a steal.
Anderson led UTSA with 27 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman Amber Gregg added 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc.
The Ladyjacks return to action Thursday, Feb. 14, when they travel to Conway, Ark., to take on Central Arkansas. The game against the Sugar Bears is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from the Farris Center.
