NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Three Ladyjacks scored in double figures Wednesday evening to lead Stephen F. Austin to a 83-56 victory over Arkansas-Monticello in an exhibition contest at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The youthful Ladyjack squad was made even younger due to the fact that head coach Lee Ann Riley elected not to start either of her two seniors. Despite the relative inexperience of the starting five, which consisted of three sophomores, a junior and a freshman, they still produced at both ends of the floor.
The starting five combined for 53 of the team's 83 points, led by junior Whitney Cormier and sophomore Jordan Ford's 14 points. Classmate Ebony Alexander chipped in 10 to finish the game in double figures. The Ladyjacks didn't rely on a simple trio for scoring, but a balanced attack both offensively and on the glass.
Every Ladyjack that entered the game scored, and pulled down at least three rebounds. SFA finished the game outrebounding their opponents, 57-45. The Ladyjacks were led by Cormier, and freshman Amina Sawyer who each finished the game with eight boards.
After a slow start shooting the basketball, SFA began to heat up, and finished the game 31-of-76 (.408) from the floor. The Ladyjacks held Arkansas-Monticello to a 20-of-71 (.282) performance, including a 6-of-27 (.222) mark from beyond the arc.
SFA showed patience on the offensive end of the floor finishing the night with 20 assists. The lone setback of the exhibition would be the 22 turnovers, but SFA forced the Cotton Blossoms into their own share of miscues as well. The Ladyjacks recorded 18 steals on the night and forced UAM into 25 turnovers.
Freshman Tammara Marion scored eight points, and pulled down six rebounds in 21 minutes action. Along with her eight rebounds, Sawyer netted eight points. Sophomores Chantol Drennan and Jackie Domino each scored seven points and pulled down four rebounds.
The Ladyjacks return to action Monday, Nov. 10, when they host St. Mary's in their final exhibition game of the season. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum. Admission to the game is free.
