FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin was picked to finish ninth in preseason polling of both Southland Conference head softball coaches and sports information directors, according to an announcement made Tuesday by league officials.
The Ladyjacks received 40 points in the head coaches poll, finishing one point behind eighth-place Northwestern State, and earned 37 points in the SID poll, again trailing Northwestern State. SFA finished ninth in the conference last season with a 19-37 overall mark and a 12-18 record in SLC play. Sam Houston State, last year's SLC Tournament champion, was picked to win the conference in both polls.
SFA landed one selection to the preseason all-conference team, which was also announced Tuesday. Sophomore third baseman Briana Bishop earned a slot on the second team after a solid rookie campaign at the plate. Bishop led the Ladyjacks and finished 11th in the conference with a .329 batting average a year ago. Her seven home runs and 14 doubles were both tops on the club, and she drove in 31 runs.
The Ladyjacks will open the 2008 season on Friday, Feb. 8, with a doubleheader against Texas-El Paso. The two-game set against the Miners is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
