Omaha, Neb. - It was a tough day for the Ladyjacks' volleyball team as they fell victim to an energized Creighton Bluejays team 3-0 (30-23, 30-20, 30-16) on Saturday night in the final match of the Bluejay Invitational.
It was the second loss, both via sweep, for the Ladyjacks (1-2, 0-0) on Saturday after falling to Middle Tennessee in the day's matinee. It marked the first time since the first two matches of 2000 that SFA has been swept in consecutive matches - a span of 226 matches.
The Creighton (2-1, 0-0)front line was difficult for SFA to handle on Saturday as Kelly Goc and Amanda Cvejdilk combined for 29 kills for the evening, while setter Korie Lebeda finished with 41 assists.
SFA would put eight players in the kill column, led by Traci Rohde's 11. Lauren Railey, who earned All-Tournament honors, just missed out on her third double-double of the weekend by finishing with 11 digs and seven kills.
The Ladyjacks struggled to get started in the first game of the evening as Creighton took the lead on the first point and never gave it back, leading by as much as 10 before taking game one 30-23. The Bluejays were very efficient early on with 24 of their points coming via kill, with only a pair of errors out of their 45 attacks for a mind-boggling .422 hitting percentage. Korie Lebeda was able to dish out 20 assists in game one to lead the offense, seven of them to fellow All-Missouri Valley selection Kelly Goc.
Early on it looked as though game two would spell a different ending as SFA rushed out to a quick 5-2 lead behind a pair of kills from Traci Rohde. But the offense would quickly stall for the visiting team. Amanda Cvejdlik would give the Bluejays the lead for good at 11-10 and Creighton was able to keep a comfortable cushion throughout the latter part of the game, ballooning the lead to as much as 10. The Ladyjacks could only muster 11 kills in the second game, hurting themselves with eight errors.
The third game turned out to look eerily similar to the first with SFA taking an brief lead at 7-4 and rally to knot the score at 15 apiece before Creighton took the final lead for good. The Ladyjacks would contribute five errors to the Bluejays' next nine points, with Kelly Goc and Allie Oelke doing the rest of the Creighton damage. SFA would finish with a -.061 hitting percentage for the final frame.
