Baseball Shut Out by Cougars

NACOGDOCHES - Stephen F. Austin baseball suffered its first shutout of the 2007 season as the University of Houston Cougars took a 4-0 win at Jaycees Field Tuesday afternoon. The Lumberjacks are 18-17 on the season and Houston is now 18-14.
The Cougars scored one run in each the third, fourth, fifth and eighth innings. With the Lumberjacks making a pitching change every inning, SFA gave up nine hits to the Cougars. Jimmy Cesario was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
SFA was able to garner only five hits, with Zach Gardner and Chris Smith nabbing two apiece. Jared Pitts had the other hit. Smith was 2-for-2 with a walk and Gardner was 2-for-4 and extended his hit streak to 14 games.
The nine SFA pitchers combined for five strikeouts with Richard Folmer striking out two in the ninth inning. Erik Gregersen, who pitched in the third inning, took the loss after giving up the first run of the game. He falls to 0-1 on the season. Gregersen gave up one run off two hits and struck out one.
The Lumberjacks will jump back into Southland Conference play Friday when they face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 6:30 p.m. from Fairgrounds Field in Robstown, Texas. The series will continue Saturday at 3 p.m. and conclude at 1 p.m. Sunday.
