
Lumberjacks Drop Heartbreaker to Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Jason Graham hit the game winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to break an 8-8 tie and give the Islanders a 9-8 victory over the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Friday night at Fairgrounds Field in Robstown, Texas. The Lumberjacks are 18-18 overall and are 6-7 in Southland Conference play. The Islanders are 21-16 overall and have a 7-6 SLC mark.
In a key league series for both teams, SFA jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Two of the runs were scored off Steven Hill's 13th home run of the season. After four innings of play, the teams were tied at six.
Kevin Croft hit his sixth home run of the season to break the tie in the top of the ninth to give the Lumberjacks the 8-6 lead.
But the Islanders put together a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth to take the win.
SFA starter Erich Lehmann pitched 4.0 innings, giving up six runs off eight hits. He walked one and struck out three. David Miller pitched 4.1 innings of relief and held the Islanders hitless and struck out seven and walked only one. Russ Fornea suffered the loss and moved his record to 2-3 after giving up the game-winning hit.
The Lumberjacks and Islanders will face off in Game 2 of the three-game series Saturday at 3 p.m. from Fairgrounds Field in Robstown, Texas.
