Bears Avoid Sweep

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin took Central Arkansas to the seventh inning knotted in a scoreless tie, but some timely hitting by the Bears and a couple of costly errors by the Ladyjacks led to six UCA runs in the seventh, and the Bears went on to take a 6-0 victory, Sunday at Hoya Field.
The loss dropped SFA to 14-22 overall and 7-5 in Southland Conference play. The Bears picked up their first SLC victory, improving to 9-27 on the season and 1-14 in league play.
The Bears had posted eight hits through the first six innings, but Debra Boles and Kari Hugie worked out of trouble to keep UCA off the board. But Central Arkansas broke through in the seventh.
The Bears loaded the bases with two infield hits and a walk to lead off the inning. UCA scored its first run on a ground-out, and scratched again two at-bats later on a muffed ground ball. The Ladyjacks erred again on the next ground ball, this time allowing two runs to score and giving UCA a 4-0 advantage. The next batter doubled home the final two runs of the game.
Hugie (7-9) came on to relieve Boles in the sixth inning. She gave up one earned run on four hits and recorded one strikeout in taking the loss. Boles maintained a shutout through five innings, giving up seven hits with one strikeout.
Center fielder Benet Higgs led SFA at the plate with two hits. Briana Bishop, Jessica Tullos, Chelsea Carr, Kim Daley and Kendal Harper each recorded one base knock.
The Ladyjacks will return to action Friday, April 6, when they kick off a three-game series against Nicholls State with a doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 4 p.m. from Hoya Field.
