HAMMOND, La. - Less than 24 hours after posting an 11-1 win over Southeastern Louisiana, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team saw its offense sputter in a 1-0 loss to the Lions Sunday. SFA was held to five base hits and stranded nine runners in the game.
Ladyjack starter Debra Boles limited Southeastern to only five hits as well, but the second one was a solo home run in the second inning. The next batter doubled, but Boles stranded her at second. The Lions mustered just two base runners in the final four innings, and neither of them advanced past second base. Boles finished with a strikeout and issued only one walk.
Meanwhile, the Ladyjacks failed to capitalize on their offensive opportunities. In the second, Jessica Tullos led off with a single, and pinch runner Crystal Garcia stole second to give SFA a runner in scoring position with no outs, but Garcia was stranded by three straight putouts.
In the fourth, Tullos drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a single by Kendal Harper. But the next batter, Chelsea Carr lined out to the shortstop, who threw behind Tullos at second for an inning-ending double play.
SFA loaded the bases in the fifth, when the Ladyjacks put two walks behind a Heather Hebert double, but Southeastern got out of the inning on a fly ball to left.
Senior Crystal Dahlquist was 2-for-4 to lead the Ladyjacks at the plate. Tullos, Harper and Hebert each hit safely once.
With the loss, SFA fell to 12-20 overall and 5-4 in Southland Conference play. The Ladyjacks will return to the field Wednesday, when they host Centenary. SFA will resume SLC action Saturday with a three-game series against Central Arkansas, when the Ladyjacks hold "Goin' to Bat for Burney" weekend, an event that will include numerous activities and prize giveaways to help raise awareness for Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
