HAMMOND, La. - Each team had strong pitching performances through the first nine innings of the game as their respective starters threw eight solid innings in Stephen F. Austin's Southland Conference opener at Southeastern Louisiana Friday night. But SFA's staff was the first to let its guard down as the Lions took a 2-1 10-inning win to snap the Lumberjacks' four-game win streak.
Jared Schrom made the start for SFA and gave up four hits in eight innings. He also had seven strikeouts and issued only one walk. Unfortunately, SLU's Wade Miley also had a strong outing and also gave up four hits in the same timeframe. After the relievers, SFA's Kevin Thomas and the Lions' Chris Province, kept the game scoreless through the ninth, the Lumberjacks were finally able to get a run across in the top of the 10th.
With one out, Zach Gardner hit a left field single and then stole second base. He put the first run on the board when he crossed the plate on a left field base hit from Noel Trevino to send SFA into the bottom of the inning with a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the 10th, Thomas was able to get Ty Summerlin to ground out to second base. But he then issued a walk to Ricky Newman. Will Lefever was called on to pinch run for Newman and proceeded to steal second before Casey Summerlin reached first on a walk. SFA then called on Heath Konesheck to relieve Thomas. With two outs, Richard Imhoff hit a single up the middle to score Lefever and tie the score at one. SLU then took the win when Dillon Sudduth hit a single to shortstop to send Casey Summerlin across the plate.
The loss sends SFA's overall record to 11-11 on the year and 0-1 in SLC play. The Lions extend their record to 15-5 overall as they won their fourth straight.
Thomas suffered his third loss of the season to move his record to 1-3 while Province took the win to move to 1-1 on the year.
At the plate, Trevino and Gardner were the only two Lumberjacks to collect more than one of SFA's six hits, as they each collected two.
The teams will face off in Game 2 of the three game set tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. from Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field in Hammond, La.
