Hill Breaks Record in Pounding of Centenary

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks scored in every inning but one, including two four-run innings, and hit five home runs in a 20-4 routing of the Centenary Gents Tuesday night. Jeff Brewer got his first home run of the season, Noel Trevino collected two, Kevin Croft knocked out his fourth in four games, and Steven Hill broke the SFA career home run record with the 20th bomb of his Lumberjack career.
Hill, a senior from Houston, was only 1-for-6 from the plate, but scored two runs and had two RBI. His sixth home run of the season broke the record set by Hayland Hardy during the 1993 season. Hill started off the year No. 5 on the list.
Croft, named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week after hitting three home runs in three games in last weekend's home stand, continued his streak hitting his fourth in four games. The Lake Jackson sophomore was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Brewer hit his first home run of the year in a 1-for-4 performance. He had two RBI and scored one run.
Trevino, who had been hitless in his last 11 at-bats, went 2-for-5 with two home runs. It was the first time this season he hit two home runs in one game, moving his season total to four.
In addition to Croft and Trevino, three other Lumberjacks collected two hits apiece. Chris Smith extended his hit streak to seven games as he collected two hits in four at-bats while scoring one run and driving in five. Justin Long was 2-for-2 with a run scored and Zach Gardner also collected two hits with a run scored and one RBI. Kevin Crabtree scored four runs for SFA. He had just one hit in the game, but reached safely after being hit by a pitch three times.
On the mound, Jacob Leonhardt started for SFA and threw four scoreless innings. He allowed only two hits and struck out two but received the no decision Richard Folmer and Erik Gregersen each pitched an inning of relief, giving up two hits and two runs apiece. Gregersen threw 15 pitches in the inning with 12 going through the strike zone. Kevin Thomas pitched two innings, giving up two hits and striking out three to earn his first win of the year, moving his record to 1-2 on the season. Josh Bone closed out the game giving up only one hit in the ninth inning.
The Lumberjacks scored in every inning but the fifth and had two four-run innings. Their 20 runs came off 14 hits and five Gents errors. It was the first time since the March 11, 2006 game versus Louisiana-Monroe that the Lumberjacks scored 15 or more runs and the first time in baseball's return to SFA for the team to reach the 20-run mark.
SFA has now won four straight games and is 9-3 in its last 12 games. The Lumberjacks' 11-10 overall record marks the first time SFA started the 2006 with a 2-1 record after the first weekend of play.
SFA returns to the diamond this weekend in Hammond, La., to open Southland Conference action against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions. Friday's game is set for a 6:30 p.m. start. Saturday's game will begin at 3 p.m. and the final game of the series is scheduled at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
