NACOGDOCHES - Senior Charity Egenti scored 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds but it wasn't enough as SFA fell to Texas-Arlington, 58-41, Saturday night in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The loss dropped SFA to 18-9 overall and 10-4 in Southland Conference play.
Despite trailing by 10 points, and shooting only 33 percent from the floor, SFA was able to put together a rally and battle their way back in the game. The Ladyjacks put together a 10-0 run to tie the game at 17 with 7:18 remaining in the first half. The game remained close for the rest of the half as the two teams went into the locker room tied at 27.
SFA finished the half shooting 37 percent from the floor, while holding the Lady Mavs to an 11-of-33 (33 percent) performance. The Ladyjacks were outrebounded by eight in the first 20 minutes, but played nearly a mistake free first half in terms of turnovers. SFA went into the locker room with only six miscues.
The Ladyjacks were unable to maintain the momentum of their first-rally, as UTA quickly jumped out to a 10-point lead in the second half. The Lady Mavs opened the half on a 14-4 run to take a 41-31 lead with 13:23 remaining. SFA went back to its low post players, but the shots just wouldn't fall for SFA in the second half. The Ladyjacks were only able to manage a 6-of-25 (24 percent) performance in the final 20 minutes, finishing the game 16-of-52 (31 percent) from the floor. UTA also held its own on the glass against the league's top rebounding team, outrebounding the Ladyjacks, 45-38.
The Lady Mavs were paced by Maryann Abanobi who finished the game with 16 points. Terra Wallace added 15 points in the victory.
Senior Jennifer Simpson added seven points and three rebounds, while freshman Martina Holloway did a good job of distributing the basketball. Holloway finished the game with a team-high eight assists. Senior Natalie Kizzee came off the bench to score six points and five rebounds.
The Ladyjacks return to action Wednesday when they close out the home portion of their schedule against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The game against the Islanders is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
