Ladyjacks Unable to Overcome Shooting Woes

TULSA, Okla. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks dropped a 13-point decision to Tulsa, 62-49, Saturday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The loss dropped SFA to 3-8 on the season.
Both teams jumped out of the gate slow offensively. Tulsa hit only one of its first seven attempts from the floor, while SFA was able to knock down only 2-of-its-first-10. Despite's its early struggles, SFA led for a majority of the half.
Tulsa started to get hot from the floor toward the latter stages of the half, going on a 8-2 run with 6:49 on the clock. The Golden Hurricane finished the half connecting on 9-of-its-final-24 to reclaim the lead. Tulsa carried a six-point advantage into the locker room behind Larissa Williams' eight points and five rebounds.
Despite SFA's offensive struggles, they didn't allow Tulsa to run and hide. SFA held an advantage on the glass outrebounding Tulsa, 25-22, in the opening half and forced the Golden Hurricane into eight turnovers.
SFA started the second half 4-of-7 from the floor, and took a one-point lead, 31-30, with 12:13 remaining. But Tulsa went on a 10-2 run, led by Williams and Chanel Johnson. Williams scored 11 of her game-high 19 points in the second half, while Johnson added 14.
Tulsa pushed its advantage to 14 points late in the game, before SFA rallied to cut the lead to seven points. The Golden Hurricane hit its free throws down the stretch to close out the scoring. SFA finished the game 17-of-63 (.270) from the floor, while Tulsa shot 44 percent. The Ladyjacks also struggled at the free throw line connecting on 11-of-21 (.524) attempts.
Senior Nikki Carr and freshman Jordan Ford led SFA in scoring. The duo scored 13 points each, while Carr added eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.
The Ladyjacks return to action Thursday when they travel to College Station, Texas to battle nationally ranked Texas A&M. The game against the Aggies is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
