NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team returns to action looking to string together consecutive wins as it hosts Tulane Friday at 7 p.m. in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA is coming off an impressive 95-57 victory against Grambling State Tuesday night that saw six players finish the game in double figures, led by freshman Jordan Ford's 25 points and 14 rebounds. Tulane is 1-1 (.500) after suffering a five-point setback to Georgia Tech Tuesday night.
Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack head coach Lee Ann Riley is 105-75 (.583) in her seventh season in Nacogdoches. She is 236-133 (.640) in her 13th season as a head coach. Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton is 267-128 (.676) in her 13th season in New Orleans. She is 329-154 entering her 17th season as a head coach.
The Ladyjacks lead the all-time series against Tulane, 4-2 (.667), but the Green Wave has won the last two meetings, both of which have been played in New Orleans. SFA dropped a 75-52 decision at Tulane to open the 2006-07 season.
First-year guard Decreasha Goodner has jumped out to a quick start to the 2007-08 season, much the same way she jumped out a quick start against Grambling State. The Austin, Texas native scored five of the team's first eight points, and 14 first-half points, on her way to a second consecutive 21-point effort. She finished the game 5-of-10 (.500) from the floor, and 11-of-14 from the free throw line (.786). It marks the first time that a Ladyjack has recorded at least 20 points in a game since former Ladyjack Charity Egenti accomplished it last season against Lamar (28 points, Jan. 11th) and McNeese State (27 points, Jan. 13th).
Along with Goodner, freshman Jordan Ford also had a career-night aganist Grambling State. The 5-10 rookie from Carrollton, Texas, led the Ladyjacks with 25 points and 14 rebounds. She finished the game 10-of-18 (.556) from the floor, and 4-of-6 (.667) from the free throw line.
The Ladyjacks did a great job of spreading around the wealth Tuesday night against Grambling State. Six players scored in double figures, led by freshmen Jordan Ford (25 points) and Decreasha Goodner (21 points). It marked the first time that SFA has had six players score in double figures in the same game since the 1999-2000 season. That year the Ladyjacks had six players record double-figure points in a 79-58 victory at Northwestern State.
Almost lost in the shuffle, due to the great start of some of the Ladyjack freshmen, has been sophomore Whitney Cormier. The Fort Worth, Texas, native has produced two solid games for SFA to start the season. Cormier is averaging 12.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game to start the season.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action Friday, Nov. 23, when they travel to El Paso, Texas, to compete in the UTEP Thanksgiving Tournament. SFA will face Nevada in the first round of the tournament. The game against the Wolf Pack is slated to begin at 4:30 (5:30 p.m. Central time) p.m. The Ladyjacks will face either tournament-host UTEP or Cal State Fullerton Saturday. The second-round games will begin at 5:30 and 8 p.m. All games will be played at the Don Haskins Center.
