Lumberjacks Fall in the Ninth Inning

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team's bid for a second consecutive victory came up one run short Wednesday afternoon. The Lumberjacks fell to Texas-Pan American, 8-7, falling to 8-33 (.195) on the season.
The Broncs jumped out to a three-run lead scoring one in the first and two in the third inning. UTPA starter Ricky Ibarz held the 'Jacks scoreless through the first three innings of the game before breaking through in the fourth inning.
SFA had runners at first and third with two out when freshman Jared Schrom singled through the left side to score Chase Sadler to plate the 'Jacks' first run of the game. But the Broncs answered with three in the top half of the next inning to take a 6-1 advantage.
The 'Jacks went into the seventh inning trailing by three when it rallied for four runs on five hits. Junior Steven Hill tripled to lead off the inning. He was followed by a Sadler single, who advanced to second on an error by the center fielder. Sadler would eventually come around to score on a wild pitch. SFA tied the game on a double by Schrom, who eventually scored the go-ahead run on a David Jeans' single.
Sophomore David Miller was called on for the second straight day to save the game for SFA, but came up a little short Wednesday. With one out and a runner on second, UTPA third baseman Patrick Brooks homered over the left field fence to give the Broncs back a one-run lead, which would be the final run of the game.
Sadler had another big afternoon going 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs and two RBI. Schrom was 2-for-4 with a couple of runs driven in, while Hill recorded two hits in five plate appearances. Miller dropped to 0-2 on the season after pitching 1.1 innings and surrendering two runs on three hits.
SFA returns to action Friday when they travel to New Orleans, La., Friday to face Tulane. The game against the Green Wave is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m.
