'Jacks Fall in Slugfest

MONROE, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team scored 15 runs and recorded 19 hits but it wasn't enough to get by Louisiana-Monroe Saturday afternoon, falling to the Indians, 16-15. The `Jacks are now 4-15 (.211) on the season and 1-4 (.200) in Southland Conference play.
The Lumberjacks rode the backs of juniors Kyle Freeman, Steven Hill and David Jeans, all of whom recorded three hits on the afternoon to help SFA take a 7-6 lead after three innings. Louisiana-Monroe answered with a run in the bottom of the third to tie the game, and one in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead, 8-7. But the Lumberjacks battled back to take 15-8 lead in the seventh after exploding for one in the fifth, three in the sixth and four in the seventh.
SFA head coach Donnie Watson had to go five players deep into his bullpen Saturday and they were unable to hold the lead. The Indians rallied for two runs in the seventh and six in the ninth for the victory.
Hill finished the game 3-for-6 at the plate with a home run and five runs batted in. He also scored two runs. Freeman was 3-for-5 with an RBI and four runs scored, while Jeans went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Junior Jake Leonhardt got the start for SFA, but only lasted two-thirds of an inning. Freshman Sammy Hardwick came on and pitched 4.2 innings in relief for the 'Jacks. He finished the game surrendering three runs on three hits and struck out one.
The Lumberjacks return to action Sunday when they close out the three-game series against Louisiana-Monroe. Sunday's game against the Indians is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
