Ladyjack Softball Splits Twin Bill

MONROE, La. - After giving up a hit in the first inning of the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks' softball game against Grambling State, senior pitcher Traci Moore was perfect for the next four innings to take her first win of the season, 9-0, in a one-hit no-walk complete game shut out of the Lady Tigers at the Mardi Gras Classic in Monroe, La. The Ladyjacks, however, were not as fortunate as they dropped Game 2, 4-0, to Southland Conference foe and tournament host, Louisiana-Monroe, in non-conference action.
Moore, a native of Fort Worth, made her first appearance of the season in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader and quickly went to work. She gave up a single to Grambling's lead-off hitter, who ended up being the only runner for the Lady Tigers. Moore struck out two batters and did not issue a walk the entire game.
The Ladyjacks' offense also went to work quickly, scoring two runs on three hits in the first inning and tacking on two more in the second to take an early 4-0 lead.
It was SFA's five-run fourth inning that ensured the Ladyjacks their victory over the Lady Tigers. Freshman Kristyn Shelton had an RBI single in her collegiate debut right before scoring on freshman Kim Daley's RBI double. With runners in scoring position, freshman Crystal Garcia hit a 2-RBI single to left field, to score Daley and freshman Sydney Davis, who had reached on a right field single. After stealing second and advancing to third on a passed ball, Garcia scored on Heather Hebert's center field single to give SFA their eventual 9-0 final score.
Garcia, a native of Jasper, Texas, had a 1-for-2 performance with two runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base. Shelton, a freshman from McKinney, Texas, went 2-for-2 with an RBI, a run scored, and a double in her first appearance of the season. As a team, the Ladyjacks had five stolen bases against Grambling State, with Lara taking two.
In Game 2 against ULM, senior pitcher, Nicole Carter, gave up three runs on four hits in two innings of work to give the Lady Indians an early 3-0 lead in the second inning. Freshman pitcher, Kari Hugie, made a relief appearance in the third inning and held the Lady Indians to just one run. She gave up five hits over four innings.
The Ladyjacks could not come back as their bats were silenced by the Lady Indians, who gave up only three hits and struck out six Ladyjack batters. Senior Carrie Woydziak, Hugie and Hebert had one hit apiece for SFA. Carter was handed her second loss of the season to give her a 1-2 record on the year.
The split moved the Ladyjacks to 3-3 overall while Grambling State moved to 0-4 and ULM stayed perfect at 7-0.
The Ladyjacks will return to the field tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. to take on the Eastern Illinois Panthers and at 6:15 p.m. to face Louisiana Tech at Lady Indian Field in Monroe, La., in Day 2 of the Mardi Gras Classic.
