ARLINGTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team overcame an 11-point deficit in the second half against Texas-Arlington to record a 39-35 win Thursday in Texas Hall. The Ladyjacks improved to 12-6 on the season and 6-1 in Southland Conference play. The league record puts SFA in a tie with Texas-Arlington atop the SLC standings, with the Ladyjacks holding a tiebreaker edge by virtue of their head-to-head win.
Senior forward LaToya Mills paced SFA with 14 points on a night when scoring was hard to come by. Both teams shot below 23 percent for the game, including a 13-percent showing from the Ladyjacks in the first half and a 12.9-percent effort from Texas-Arlington. But Mills took advantage of the Lady Mavericks' poor shooting in a big way. She pulled down 24 rebounds - including 10 on offense - to tie for the third best single-game effort in school history. Mills was also 6-for-10 from the foul line to lead a 14-for-22 effort by the Ladyjacks.
Texas Arlington led SFA at halftime, 17-15, and the Lady Mavs stretched their lead to 11 points with a big run early in the second half. But the Ladyjacks clamped down on UTA and held the Lady Mavs to 25.8 percent shooting in the second half. Meanwhile, SFA was able to boost its own shooting percentage to 32. The Ladyjacks' four-point final margin was their largest lead of the game.
Senior guard Britany Vinson came off the bench to score seven points for the Ladyjacks. Senior guard Kirby Killingsworth and freshman guard Anitria Mosley scored five points apiece. No other SFA player managed more than three points. Tojjinay Thompson scored 13 points to lead UTA.
The Ladyjacks will return to action Saturday when they host Lamar. The game is scheduled to tip off at 4 p.m. in the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
