NACOGDOCHES - Senior guard Kirby Killingsworth scored a team-high 17 points and classmate Britany Vinson came off the bench to add 16, as the Ladyjacks defeated Lamar, 80-58, Thursday night at the Montagne Center. The Ladyjacks improved to 9-5 (.643) overall and a perfect 3-0 in Southland Conference play.
Despite shooting only 26-of-67 (.388) from the floor and allowing the Lady Cardinals a 19-for-45 (.422) effort, SFA dominated the game with its rebounding and perimeter shooting. The Ladyjacks recorded a 41-33 edge on the glass and tied a school record with their 11 three-point field goals. SFA also made the most of its free throws, converting 17-of-22 (77 percent).
But the real story of the game was in the turnovers. The Ladyjacks forced Lamar into 25 miscues, which SFA was able to convert into 23 points.
After SFA built an early eight-point advantage, 20-12, with 9:45 remaining in the first half, the Lady Cardinals went on an 8-0 to tie the game at 20, with 7:39 left in the half. Vinson responded with one of her game-high three-pointers to give SFA back a three-point advantage. The Ladyjacks built that lead to as many as 13 before taking a nine-point lead into halftime. More turnovers and the Ladyjacks dominance from beyond the arc prevented Lamar from making a run at SFA in the second half.
Senior LaToya Mills and junior Jennifer Simpson finished the game with 11 points. Sophomore point guard Nikki Carr added eight points, grabbed a team-high six rebounds and dished out five assist. Lamar was led by LaToya Carson's 21 points.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they travel to Lake Charles, La., to face McNeese State. The game against the Cowgirls is slated to begin at 3 p.m., from Burton Coliseum.
