HAMMOND, La. - Despite 19 points and nine rebounds from junior LaToya Mills and 18 points from classmate Kirby Killingsworth, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team dropped a 73-72 decision to Southeastern Louisiana Saturday afternoon. The loss drops SFA to 10-9 on the season and 4-4 in Southland Conference play.
Senior Zedralyn Butler hit a layup with 3:17 on the clock to give SFA a 13-point lead, 70-57. But the Lady Lions picked the final three minutes of the contest to make their charge at SFA. Sparked by a Nakeya Downing layup Southeastern rattled off nine unanswered points to cut the Ladyjacks' lead to 70-66 with 1:35 remaining. The Lady Lions sent Mills to the free-throw where she hit her two attempts, but unfortunately for the Ladyjacks it would be their final two points of the contest.
Southeastern's Dacia McGowan hit a three-pointer with 42 seconds to pull the Lady Lions within a point, 72-71. SLU then forced a turnover and took a one-point lead off a McGowan layup, which would prove to be the difference in the game.
McGowan finished the game with 23 points, while Downing fouled out with 17 points and seven rebounds.
The Ladyjacks were hurt by miscues, turning the ball over 22 times which the Lady Lions turned into 30 points. The Ladyjacks also missed their final four free throws after hitting 13 of their first 16 attempts.
Junior Britany Vinson added 12 points, while senior Stacey Szymanski added seven points and four rebounds.
The Ladyjacks return to action Thursday night when they face Texas State. The game against the Bobcats is set to tip-off at 7 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The game will also be televised on Fox SportsNet.
