
Ladyjacks Rally to Beat Texas State

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team rallied from an eight-point second-half deficit to knock-off Texas State, 61-57, Thursday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Bobcats were tied for the top spot in the league coming into the game. The victory propels SFA to 11-9 (.550) over and 5-4 (.556) in the conference.
The Ladyjacks jumped out to a quick start, nailing five of its first seven attempts from the floor. But SFA went into the locker room trailing by two, 29-27, after finishing the half five of its last 20. The Ladyjacks shot only 10-of-27 (.370) from the floor, but were able to stay in the game by holding the Bobcats to a 9-of-25 (.360) first-half performance. The Ladyjacks also forced the Bobcats into 12 first-half turnovers.
Texas State pushed its advantage to as many as eight points in the second half behind 22 points from Joyce Ekworomadu and Tori Talbert. But the Ladyjacks didn't just allow the Bobcats an easy victory as they slowly began to chip away at the lead. Junior Kirby Killingsworth drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 53 with only 2:53. Killingsworth's three provided the Ladyjacks with all the momentum as they outscored the Bobcats, 8-4, in the closing minutes. Killingsworth finished the game with 14 points, to tie senior Alex Bowman for team-high honors.
Junior Britany Vinson added 12 points and pulled down five rebounds for the Ladyjacks. Senior Stacey Szymanski added seven points.
Outside of Talbert and Edworomadu only three other players scored for the Bobcats as SFA held the conference's top-shooting team to 21-of-53 (.396) from the floor. The Ladyjacks forced the Bobcats into 22 miscues on the night.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they host Sam Houston State in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The game against the Bearkats is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
