COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team won the 2005 Air Force Classic, defeating tournament-host Air Force, 67-63, Saturday night at Clune Arena. The victory propelled SFA to 3-3 (.500) on the season, and also marked the first loss of the season for the Falcons.
The Ladyjacks jumped out to a 20-5 lead behind some sizzling shooting, hitting 78 percent of their shot in the first eight minutes of the game. Senior LaToya Mills scored 12 of the team's first 14 points and finished the game with 23 points and nine rebounds. Mills also earned all-tournament honors. She also became the 22nd Ladyjack to score 1,000 career points with her 11th point in the game.
The Ladyjacks held Air Force to one of their worst performances of the season, allowing the Falcons only18 field goals (31 percent). The Falcons were able to battle their way back into the game by out-rebounding SFA and forcing the Ladyjacks into 24 turnovers. But it wasn't enough as senior Britany Vinson had another strong performance from beyond the arc. Less than 24 hours after scoring 19 points and hitting 5-of-6 three pointers, Vinson returned to the court to score 17 points, while shooting 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. Vinson earned tournament MVP honors for her performance.
The Ladyjacks finished the game 25-of-56 (45 percent) from the field. Senior Kendria Smith added 10 points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked four shots in a victorious effort.
The Ladyjacks return to action Tuesday night when they host Arkansas-Little Rock. The game against the Trojans is slated to begin at 7 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
