LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Despite not trailing for the first 35:41 of the contest, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team lost to the UNLV Lady Rebels Friday night, 72-66, in the first round of the Lady Rebel Shootout. The Ladyjacks (1-2) will face Chattanooga, who lost to Tennessee Tech in the first game of the tournament, Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
The Ladyjacks outplayed UNLV in the first half owning a seven-point advantage, 32-25, at halftime. SFA was 13-of-34 (.382) from the floor, including five three pointers, while holding the Lady Rebels to a 9-of-29 (.310) performance in the opening stanza. The Ladyjacks also forced UNLV into 12 first-half turnovers.
UNLV battled back to tie the game on two separate occasions in the second half, but the Ladyjacks were always up to the task, as junior Evelyn Edwards broke both ties for SFA. Edwards finished the game with a season-high 10 points and six rebounds.
The Ladyjacks looked like they were moving in for the knock-out punch when they took a nine-point advantage, 57-48, with only 7:12 remaining in the game. But UNLV went on an 18-2 run to take their first lead, 60-59, with just over four minutes remaining. The Lady Rebels pushed their advantage to as many as seven points before senior LaToya Mills responded by knocking down consecutive buckets to cut the lead to three points, 66-63, but the Ladyjacks could get no closer.
Mills finished the game with 18 points and seven rebounds. Mills was joined by classmate Kirby Killingsworth who also added 18 points on 6-of-12 (.500) shooting. Sophomore Nikki Carr added 12 points and dished out five assists.
