DENTON, Texas - Despite a 19-point, 13-rebound effort from senior LaToya Mills, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team lost to North Texas, 71-65, Friday night at the Super Pit.
It was a game of momentum swings that saw North Texas take an early 9-0 advantage. The Ladyjacks turned up the defense, which sparked a 20-7 run over the next seven minutes of the first half, as momentum swung in favor of SFA. The Ladyjacks forced UNT into 11 first-half turnovers and 23 for the game. The game remained close for the rest of the first half as neither team could build more than a four-point advantage. North Texas would go into the halftime with the momentum as Sanetra Jackson hit the Mean Green's first three-pointer of the game to give UNT a 32-30 advantage heading into the break.
North Texas held the momentum in the second half, building a 10-point advantage, 55-45, with 9:57 remaining before SFA mounted a rally. Led by senior Kirby Killingsworth's 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting, SFA cut the lead to three points with 2:02 on the clock. But that would be as close as SFA would get as North Texas hit their free throws down the stretch to ice the victory.
The Ladyjack defense forced UNT into 23 turnovers and held the Mean Green to only 19 field goals, but the difference was made at the free-throw line as the North Texas connected on 31-of-43 field goal attempts (.721), while SFA was 8-of-13 (.615) from the stripe.
The Ladyjacks return to action Monday when they host Alcorn State. The game against the Lady Braves is set to begin at 7 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
