NACOGDOCHES - A win on Saturday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum would mean a lot of things for the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks. It would be their 15th straight win and their 14th Southland Conference victory. It would even up their all-time record against Texas-Arlington at 16-16 and be Debbie Humphrey's 400th win as head volleyball coach of the Ladyjacks, who's in her 18th year at SFA.
However, no. 400 is the last thing on Humphreys' mind.
"We want the win but 400 is irrelavent," she said, "because we're on a mission to win a conference title."
The Ladyjacks will host Texas-Arlington on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Johnson Coliseum in the first of their last two homestands. It will be the first and only meeting between the two teams since their match scheduled for Sept. 22 was canceled because of Hurricane Rita.
"This is an important match because we have to take care of business at home," said Humphreys. "We have to take advantage because we only play each other once."
UTA, a traditional SLC powerhouse, has had trouble putting together some numbers for their win column. After a loss to McNeese State on Tuesday, the Lady Mavs fell to 4-16 overall and a 2-9 SLC mark.
"UTA has struggled, but we know what they're capable of as individual players," said Humphreys. "They have a lot of talent and have had their moments, just not consistently."
The Ladyjacks, on the other hand, have had success this season as they go into Saturday's match riding a 15-match winning streak and in search of their 14th SLC win.
Being the only undefeated team in the SLC, SFA has remained in the driver's seat all season. The Ladyjacks hold a two-match lead over Sam Houston State and a three-match lead over Texas State, whom the Ladyjacks defeated on Tuesday.
"We know what level UTA can play at and that's the level we need to be prepared for," Humphreys said. "If they don't play at that level, then that's fine, but we have to expect them to play so we can get the win."
