
Ladyjacks Lose at Sam Houston State

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Despite a 19-point, 12-rebound effort from junior LaToya Mills, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team lost to Sam Houston State, 59-47, Saturday night at the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks are now 7-7 (.500) on the season and 1-2 (.333) in the Southland Conference.
The Bearkats led by as many as eight points in the first half before SFA went on an 11-3 run to tie the game at 17 with only 4:42 remaining in the first half. The was game tied at 22 with only 2:34 remaining when the Ladyjacks built a four-point advantage by forcing the Bearkats into four turnovers in the final two minutes of the half, which the Ladyjacks turned into four points. The Ladyjacks led 26-22 at the intermission.
The Ladyjacks held their advantage until the 9:37 mark of the second half when the Bearkats Sarah Hilton drained a jumper to give SHSU its first lead of the half, 39-37. Hilton sparked a Bearkat rally as SHSU built its lead to six points 45-39, with only 6:23 remaining. The Bearkats extended their advantage to as many as 13 points in the second half behind solid long-range shooting, going 9-of-20 (.450) from beyond the three-point arc. SHSU's Stephanie Trachier led the Bearkats with her 13 points on 5-of-6 (.833) shooting.
Sophomore Jennifer Simpson came off the bench to score seven points, record three steals, two rebounds and two assists. Senior Jaliyla Muhammad scored two points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out a team-high five assists, had four steals and a block.
The Ladyjacks return to action Wednesday night when they travel to Thibodaux, La., to face Nicholls State. The game against the Lady Colonels is slated to begin at 5:15 p.m., from Stopher Coliseum.
