THIBODAUX - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team put an end to its two-game skid Wednesday night, knocking off Nicholls State, 68-55, in Thibodaux. The Ladyjacks improve to 8-7 overall and 2-2 in Southland Conference play.
The Ladyjacks struggled in the first half turning the basketball over 14 times but were able to shoot their way out of trouble, going 15-of-25 (.600) from the floor in the opening stanza. The Ladyjacks went into the intermission leading by two, 32-30, despite leading scorer LaToya Mills sitting the majority of the first half in foul trouble.
The Ladyjacks cut down on the turnovers in the second half only handing the ball over four times, as SFA increased its lead to 11 points, 52-41, with 8:37 remaining. The Ladyjacks picked up the defensive intensity in the second half as they forced the Lady Colonels into 14 second half turnovers while SFA extended its lead to 13 points. SFA hit its free throws down the stretch for the victory.
Senior Stacey Szymanski returned the SFA lineup, after missing the Sam Houston State game with an injury, to score 13 points and grab seven rebounds. Junior Britany Vinson added 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they take on Lamar. The game against the Lady Cardinals is slated to begin at 4 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
