SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team closed out the 2003-04 regular-season with a route of the Texas State Bobcats, 91-68. The Ladyjacks improved to 9-18 on the season and 9-7 in Southland Conference play.
The Ladyjacks jumped out to an early six-point advantage, 17-11, as SFA knocked down 7 of its first 8 shots. Sophomore LaToya Mills led the charge with her career-high 30 points and 11 rebounds. The Ladyjacks also forced Texas State into 13 first-half turnovers, which the Ladyjacks cashed in for 16 points as they built an 11-point advantage. The Ladyjacks went into halftime leading, 44-35, as junior Tiffany Perkins and sophomore Kendria Smith each added 13 points.
The Ladyjacks were 16-of-29 (.552) from the floor in the first half, while outrebounding the Bobcats, 18-11. The Ladyjacks stingy defense never allowed 2003 SLC Player of the Year Tori Talbert to find a groove offensively, scoring only 13 points and pulling down seven rebounds. SFA held the Bobcats to 9-of-24 (.375) from the floor in the opening half.
Nothing changed in the second half as SFA put on more steam. The Ladyjacks built their lead to as many as 23 points in the second half as they shot 56 percent for the game, while holding Texas State to a 38-percent performance. SFA also outrebounded the Texas State, 39-29. The Ladyjacks also got the job done at the free-throw line going 24-for-28 (.857).
Junior Stacey Szymanski scored 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting, while classmate Alex Bowman added 12 points and four rebounds.
The Ladyjacks will return to action Tuesday in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament, as they travel to Arlington, Texas, to take on the third-seeded Lady Mavericks. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The Ladyjacks opening-round opponent is yet to be determined.
