NACOGDOCHES - Four Ladyjacks scored in double figures as the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team came from behind Thursday night to knock off defending SLC regular-season champion Texas-San Antonio, 64-59. The Ladyjacks are now 4-14 (.222) overall and 4-4 (.500) in Southland Conference play.
UTSA built a eight-point lead, 10-2, early in the opening half taking advantage of 12 first-half Ladyjack turnovers. But the Ladyjacks didn't allow the Roadrunners to take control of the game, as SFA shot 8-for-21 (38.1 percent) in the first half and went into halftime down only five, 28-23.
In similar fashion to the victory over Southeastern Louisiana Saturday night, the Ladyjacks came out in the second half and took better care of the basketball and shot 13-for-28 (46.4 percent) from the floor while forcing the Roadrunners into 20 turnovers.
The Ladyjacks were trailing by three points, 37-34, with 13:48 left when sophomore Kirby Killingsworth hit a three-pointer to tie the game. The Ladyjacks then went on an 8-1 run over the next 5:14 of the contest to build a seven-point advantage sparked by Killingsworth's 14 second-half points. Killingsworth finished the game 4-of-8 (50 percent) from behind the arc.
The Ladyjacks never surrendered the lead hitting their free throws down the stretch to ice the five-point victory. SFA finished the game 16-of-20 (80 percent) from the free-throw line.
Sophomore Kendria Smith led the Ladyjacks with 16 points, while classmate LaToya Mills added 11 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Nikki Carr finished the game with 10 points and a team-high four assists.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they host Louisiana-Monroe. The game against the Lady Indians is slated to get under way at 6:15 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
