HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks shot 15-of-24 (.625) in the second half to rally for a 70-54 victory at Sam Houston State Saturday afternoon. The Ladyjacks are now 8-17 (.320) on the season and 8-6 (.571) in Southland Conference play.
The first half was a back-n-forth contest that saw 10 lead changes and five ties. The Bearkats shot 10-of-21 (.476) from the floor in the first half to build a three-point halftime advantage, 33-30. But that would be as close to victory as Sam Houston State would get as the Ladyjacks opened the second half with an 18-5 run to take a 48-38 advantage with 14:57 left in the game. Sophomore LaToya Mills scored five unanswered points and classmate Kendria Smith followed with two buckets to spark the rally. Mills finished with seven points in limited action while Smith scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Junior Tiffany Perkins took over from there as she led the Ladyjacks scoring a career-high 20 points on 6-of-10 (.600) shooting and 4-of-7 (.571) from beyond the arc. Behind the play of Perkins SFA built a 15-point advantage, 67-52, with 3:02 remaining. Sam Houston State couldn't mount a series charge from that point as SFA cruised to the 16-point victory.
Junior Alex Bowman scored 13 points and dished out five assists. Freshman Nikki Carr also added 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
The Bearkats were led by Erica Parker and Stacy Allen who finished the game with 13 points each.
The Ladyjacks return to action Tuesday Mar. 2nd, when they return to the William R. Johnson Coliseum to host Northwestern State. The game against the Lady Demons is scheduled to begin at 8:15 p.m.
