NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team got 23 points and 13 rebounds from junior LaToya Mills Saturday night as SFA rallied for a 68-61 victory over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. The victory propels SFA to 4-3 (.571) and drops the Golden Hurricane to 7-1 (.875).
After falling behind by as many as seven points in the first half, the Ladyjacks rallied outscoring Tulsa, 11-4 over the final 4:49 of the first half to go into halftime tied at 26, despite shooting only 9-of-30 (.300) from the floor and being outrebounded. The Ladyjacks held the momentum in the second half opening on a 6-0 run to take a 32-26 advantage. The Ladyjacks then turned to their defense to hold the lead.
SFA recorded 15 steals and forced the Golden Hurricane into 29 turnovers. The Ladyjacks converted those turnovers into 22 points, as they were able to prevent Tulsa from scratching its way back in the lead.
Despite recording the first seven fouls of the game, it was the Golden Hurricane that struggled with foul problems. Tulsa's Jillian Robbins and Megan Moody each scored 12 points but both fouled out of the game.
Senior Jaliyla Muhammad scored a career-high 11 points, while junior Britany Vinson added eight points on 2-of-5 (.400) shooting from beyond the three-point line. Seniors Alex Bowman and Zedralyn Butler each added six points in a victorious effort.
The Ladyjacks will go in search of their fourth-straight victory Tuesday night when they host Arkansas State. The game against the Lady Indians is slated to tip-off at 7 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
