NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team got 24 points and nine rebounds from Junior LaToya Mills, as SFA defeated Southern, 74-68, Friday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks are now 3-3 (.500) on the season.
The Ladyjacks got out of the gates early against Southern jumping out to a 15-point lead, 26-11, with only 9:09 remaining in the half. The Ladyjacks seemed in complete control of the game. Southern put the ball in the hands of their leading scorer Rolanda Martin who sparked a 13-0 first half run with her 24-point performance. SU pulled to within five points and cut the lead to just one, 39-38, heading into halftime.
The Ladyjacks never lost their composure against SU and forged their lead back to double-digits, 60-50, with 9:23 remaining. Senior Zedralyn Butler was the catalyst behind the Ladyjacks 10-2 run as SFA built back its lead. Butler finished the game with 17 points on 8-of-10 (.800) shooting. She also added nine rebounds.
SU made one last rally late in the game to cut the lead to six points but it was too little, too late as the Ladyjacks held on for the victory.
Mills finished her third-straight game of scoring at least 20 points. She was 11-for-14 (.786) from the floor and also pulled down nine rebounds. The Ladyjacks finished the night 30-of-59 (.508) as a team. Junior Kirby Killingsworth added eight points, four assists, four steals, three rebounds and a block in 32 minutes of action.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday Dec. 18, when they host Tulsa. The game against the Golden Hurricane is slated to begin at 4 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
