Ladyjacks Fall to Louisiana-Monroe

MONROE, La. - Despite a career-high 23 points and a school-record eight blocks from sophomore Kendria Smith, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team lost to Louisiana-Monroe, 70-51, at Fant-Ewing Coliseum Thursday night. The Ladyjacks are now 1-13 overall and 1-3 in the Southland Conference.
The Ladyjacks jumped out of the gate quickly building a 12-2 advantage on 5-of-6 (.833) shooting. But the Lady Indians went on a 17-0 run over the next 10:15 of the first half to take a 19-12 advantage. ULM's Nena Randle sparked the run with her team-high 13 points and 15 rebounds. ULM extended its advantage to 11 points and went into the intermission with a 32-21 lead.
After opening the game nearly perfect from the floor, the Ladyjacks cooled off hitting only 2 of their next 17 shots over the final 15 minutes of the first half. The Ladyjacks still managed to outshoot the Lady Indians (10-of-30/.333) in the first half but were failed by 16 turnovers, which ULM converted into 15 points.
The Ladyjacks fought back in the second half cutting the lead to seven points, 43-36, with 12:31 remaining. Sophomore LaToya Mills led the rally with her 10 points and 11 rebounds. But ULM would allow the Ladyjacks to get no closer as they pulled away down the stretch for the 19-point win.
Sophomore Kirby Killingsworth added six points and pulled down eight rebounds.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they host Texas-Arlington. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m., from the William R. Johnson.
