NACOGDOCHES - Senior Amy Collins (San Antonio, Texas) scored 13 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Ladyjacks to a 54-42, victory over league-leading Texas-San Antonio Thursday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks are now 13-11 (.542) overall and in a two-way for second in the Southland Conference with a 13-4 (.765) league record.
The Roadrunners hit the first basket of the game and extended their advantage to three, 8-5, with 16:40 remaining in the first half but that would be as close as the Roadrunners would get to a victory Thursday. SFA head coach Lee Ann Riley simply turned up the pressure and let her suffocating Ladyjack defense take care of the rest. The Ladyjacks held UTSA to a 14-of-54 (.259) performance from the floor and 4-of-19 (.211) from beyond the three-point arc. SFA outrebounded UTSA, 23-14, in the second to roll to their fifth consecutive victory.
UTSA tried to mount a late rally, cutting what had been a 12-point SFA advantage down to eight, 47-39, behind Julie Rampley's game-high 15 points. But senior Nathesia Wright (Arlington, Texas) and freshman Kirby Killingsworth (Longview, Texas) responded by adding 10 points, each, to get the lead back to 14 points, 53-39, with only 69 seconds remaining. Freshman LaToya Mills (Houston, Texas) added nine points and pulled down seven rebounds in the victorious effort.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they travel to San Marcos, Texas, for their final road game of the regular season. The Ladyjacks are scheduled to take on Southwest Texas at 5:45 p.m., from Strahan Coliseum.
