Colonels Defeat Ladyjacks

HOUSTON, Texas - Junior Stacey Szymanski scored a career-high 19 points, but it wasn't enough as SFA lost to Eastern Kentucky, 84-73, Saturday evening at the Gene Hackerman/Rice Invitational. The loss drops SFA to 0-6 on the season.
The story of the first half was free throws. Eastern Kentucky built a 14-point halftime advantage by knocking down 18-of-20 (.900) free throws, while the Ladyjacks struggled from the line going 9-of-19 (.474) in the opening stanza. Freshman Nikki Carr led the Ladyjacks attack with a team-high nine first-half points.
Neither team started quickly in the second half as each team recorded turnovers on its first two possessions. But the Ladyjacks mounted a rally with 13:08 on the clock. EKU led by 12 points when junior Alex Bowman nailed a three pointer to cut the lead to nine, 56-47, with 12:53 remaining. The Ladyjacks then went on a 15-5 run over the next 4:30 of the game to pull within two points, 61-59. Szymanski sparked the SFA run scoring 15 of her team-high 19 points in the second half. But the Colonels hit their free throws down the stretch, going 10-of-10 to put the game on ice.
Carr finished the game with a career-high 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Sophomore Kirby Killingsworth added 12 points and pulled down nine points.
EKU was led by Katie Kelly's game-high 22 points.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday Dec. 13th, when they return home to face Oklahoma. The game is slated to tipoff at 2 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
