NACOGDOCHES - Freshman LaToya Mills (Houston, Texas) scored a career-high 18 points and pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds as the Ladyjacks defeated Lamar Thursday evening, 63-38. The Ladyjacks improved to 6-7 (.462) overall and 6-0 in the Southland Conference.
SFA jumped out to a 24-8 lead behind Mills' 14 first-half points and nine first-half rebounds. Classmate Kim Branch (Wortham, Texas) added 11 points as SFA cruised into the halftime with a 30-17 advantage.
Lamar had an opportunity to sneak back in the contest early in the second half as SFA missed its first three shots, but the Cardinals couldn't capitalize on the opportunity and SFA forged ahead by 19 points. Lamar never seriously threatened SFA from that point as the Ladyjacks built their lead to as many 26 in the second half.
The Cardinals were victimized by turnovers and poor shooting. The Ladyjacks forced Lamar into 22 turnovers, while only allowing Lamar to shoot 25 percent from the floor. SFA also outrebounded the Cardinals, 52-43.
Lamar was led by Audrea Samuel who scored 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Freshman Kirby Killingsworth (Longview, Texas) scored eight second-half points to finish the game with nine. Classmate Kendria Smith (Shreveport, La.) had a solid outing finishing the game with seven points, six rebounds and career-high five blocks.
The Ladyjacks will look to get back to .500 for the season when they face Sam Houston State Saturday. The game is slated to tipoff at 6:15 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
