NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin softball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader with Texas A&M (18-4) at the Coy Simms Softball Complex Wednesday evening by scores of 8-0 and 6-1.
SFA (4-23) managed only one hit off A&M's Jessica Slataper (9-2) in the opening game as the Aggies scored eight runs on 10 hits off SFA pitchers Traci Moore and Devin Cobb. Moore (2-8) took the loss for SFA as she worked 5.1 innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits. All seven runs were earned. The Aggies, ranked in the top 25 in the nation, scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning following a leadoff single by Lisa Klam, who then stole second base. With two outs, clean up hitter Selena Collins single home the game's first run. A&M added another run later in the inning, when a pick-off attempt by SFA catcher Kacie Lancaster got away from Meryl McGuire allowing a run to score.
A&M added runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning in moving to the 8-0 win.
In the nightcap, it appeared that the 'Jacks might pull one out as they scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Meryl McGuire tripled to right field to lead off the inning. Erica Henrion followed with an RBI single to make it 1-0. SFA could not push across another run leaving a runner on base.
The Aggies came right back in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs on five hits. The inning turned when right fielder Adrian Gregory tripled down the right field line with two on and two outs. Leading 2-1, A&M then added four more runs to seal the win.
SFA tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning as Devin Cobb singled to open the inning, but third baseman Ragen Rutherford grounded into a double play to erase Cobb. Shortstop Mimi Van Ryn then singled with two outs, but was left on when Sarah Stone grounded out to end the game.
SFA returns to action Friday as they travel to Lafayette, Louisiana for a non-conference match-up with the Ragin Cajuns before a conference series with McNeese State in Lake Charles, Saturday and Sunday.
