WACO, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin softball team went 1-4 over the weekend at the Compass Bank Invitational softball tournament, hosted by Baylor University. SFA, 4-16 on the season, picked up a win over Akron by a 4-3 score in extra innings, and suffered four losses to Baylor, Creighton, San Diego State and Oakland.
SFA opened the tournament with the extra inning win over Akron to snap a twelve game losing streak. The game was scoreless through eight innings before each team scored a single run in the ninth inning. SFA then scored two runs in the bottom of the tenth when Sally Hill doubled home the winning runs with the bases loaded and one out. Traci Moore (3-4) picked up the win for SFA as she pitched the final 3.2 innings in relief of Devin Cobb. Cobb threw six plus innings of scoreless work at Akron before giving way to Moore in the top of the seventh inning. Cobb allowed only two hits and struck out two batters.
In game two of the tournament, two Baylor pitchers combined to no-hit the SFA softball team for the third time this season. Baylor scored ten runs on nine hits and took advantage of four SFA errors in handing SFA a 10-0 loss. A six run third inning provided the Bears all the offense they would need as they sent SFA to its 13th loss of the season.
Saturday saw the 'Jacks drop three close decisions, starting with a 1-0 loss to Creighton. The Bluejays scored the single run on three hits, and did not allow a run in spite of giving up a pair of hits to the 'Jacks. Cobb (1-4) took the loss for SFA.
The tournament concluded with SFA dropping a 3-1 game to San Diego State and a 5-2 decision to Oakland in the tournament finale.
SFA returns to action this week as the team travels to Austin to take on the University of Texas, February 26 at 5:00 p.m. The home opener for the 'Jacks is March 2 at the Coy Simms Softball Complex when SFA opens Southland Conference play against Southwest Texas.
