NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team signed Nikki Carr (Hawkins, Texas) and Evelyn Edwards (Little Elm, Texas) to National Letters of Intent announced head coach Lee Ann Riley Wednesday afternoon.
"I am very pleased with the athleticism we have added to our team," said SFA head coach Lee Ann Riley. "We like to play a fast, get up and down the court style of basketball. Both of these young ladies can run and jump, and both fit our style of play."
Carr is a 5-6 guard that averaged 24.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, 6.7 steals and 4.4 assists per game at Hawkins High School. She is the two-time District 19-2A Most Valuable Player that has earned first-team all-East Texas, TABC first-team all-region and all-state honors. She was also named to the Texas Sportswriters Association and Texas Basketball Magazine all-state teams. Carr also guided her prep squad to a co-district championship as a junior. Carr was named newcomer of the year as a rookie, guiding Hawkins to the regional quarterfinals. Carr is a multi-sport athlete that excelled in volleyball, softball and track.
"We targeted the best players in East Texas and we felt that Nikki was the best player in this part of the state," said Riley. "She is just tremendous athlete who is very competitive. I've followed her through AAU ball and was impressed with how she continued to elevate her level of play against better competition."
Edwards is 6-0 forward that was rated among the top 20 players in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area by the Dallas Morning News. She averages 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists per game for Little Elm High School. Along with Carr, Edwards is also a multi-sport athlete for the Ladyjacks. She was a three-time first-team all-district selection in basketball and volleyball. Edwards was also a two-time all-region selection that earned all-state recognition.
"Evelyn is a versatile athlete that we envision playing the three spot for us," said Riley. "She runs the floor well and is a player who can score from the inside or outside. Both of these players are classy student-athletes that we targeted early in the recruiting process and are thrilled to have them in our program."
The Ladyjacks open up the 2002-03 season Saturday Nov. 23, in Fayetteville, Ark., against Arkansas. The game is slated to get underway at 7 p.m.
