Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball coach Lee Ann Riley announced today the addition of Dayna Westbrook to the Ladyjack basketball coaching staff as an assistant coach. Westbrook's hiring rounds out Riley's full-time assistant coaches, with only one restricted position left to fill.
"I am extremely excited to add an assistant coach like Dayna Westbrook. Not only has she proven herself as a coach in the Texas high school coaching ranks, but she also brings with her a tie to the traditions and past of Ladyjack basketball. With Pennee Hall and Dayna Westbrook, we now have two of the best coaches in the state of Texas working to return Ladyjack basketball to dominance. Dayna has a vested interest in the Ladyjack basketball program. She takes pride in what she does and what she is involved in, and those attributes will only make us better. Most of all though, she's a winner," said Riley.
Westbrook joins the SFA staff after spending the past eight seasons as the head girl's basketball coach at Central Heights High School. This past season, Westbrook led Central Heights to the Conference 2A state championship, and a 34-4 record. She was also named the Coach of the Year in Conference AA by the Texas Sportswriters Association, and is a two-time District Coach of the Year award winner. She also coached the Central Heights girl's cross country team to a state championship in 1997.
The Tyler, Texas native was an All-Southland Conference standout guard for the Ladyjacks from 1987-1991. During her four year career at SFA, she helped the Ladyjacks to an overall record of 114-17, four straight SLC regular season titles and four straight NCAA tournament appearances.
The Ladyjacks advanced to the Sweet 16 twice during that four year span. Westbrook, who played at SFA as Dayna Reed, remains first on the all-time three point field goal percentage list and fifth on the all-time games played list. She is also tenth on the all-time scoring list with 1,550 points in her career. She also holds a share of the single game record of three pointers in a game, with seven treys on two separate occasions during her playing career.
Westbrook will join the staff in May and will assist Riley in all phases of the program.
