The Ladyjack softball team earned a split of a Southland Conference doubleheader with Nicholls State Friday afternoon by taking the nightcap of the twin-bill, 2-1. The Ladyjacks dropped the opener of the three game series by a 4-1 margin.
In game one, the Ladyjack bats were silent as they could not come up with a hit when they needed it in losing, 4-1. Nicholls State starter Duffi Matherno allowed only three hits, but gave up seven walks in the complete game victory. SFA stranded eight base runners in the game. It appeared as if SFA would breakout on top early when they loaded the bases with only one out in the bottom of the second inning. Left fielder Sascha Taylor lined out to left, then Erica Henrion was thrown out at the plate to end the threat and keep a scoreless tie.
Nicholls State pushed across three runs in the top of the fourth inning following a leadoff walk and a fielder's choice to short on which there was no out recorded. Following a ground out that moved the runner sup a base, Nicholls State pinch hitter Lori Duplechain reached on an error by third baseman Ashley Moffett, a run scored on the play. Lead-off hitter Julie Rodriguez then lined a single to center two drive in a pair of runs to put Nicholls on top 3-0.
In game two, Kristin Nolan picked up the win in going the distance allowing only one run on six hits while striking out three. Nicholls took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second when the Lady Colonels had back-to-back singles from DH Nicole Stewart and first baseman Jennifer Sladky. After a ground out moved the runners up a base, Stewart scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kyna Boyer.
SFA answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning after a lead-off walk from designated hitter Erica Henrion. LeKita Baker followed with an infield single. With two outs and runners at second and third, Angela Froboese walked to load the bases. LeKita Baker then scored on a wild pitch to knot the game at 1-1.
The Ladyjack defense kept the game tied in the top of the sixth inning with a great play at the plate by Froboese. Nicole Stewart doubled to right field with one out and tried to score on a single to left by the catcher Sarah Eads. Sascha Taylor charged the ball and threw a strike to Froboese, who did a great job of blocking the plate to end the inning with the double play.
SFA scored in the bottom of the seventh after three walks loaded the bases for Froboese with one out. She grounded to first to drive in the game winner.
The teams meet Saturday at noon for the rubber game of the series.
